Lane High School Reunion
A Few Small Changes
By Larry Johnson
We are looking forward to this year’s annual reunion to be held back at East Rivanna VFD on Saturday, November 1st. There are several changes we want to make you aware of as the reunion approaches.
This reunion will cost only $20 per person. We can do this due to the generous donations by so many of you, as well as the continued success of the attendance continuing to increase over the years. We will still require that you mail in the reunion reservation form as in the past. It is posted on the lanehsonward.com website. We have room for no more than 325 people, so we encourage you not to wait until the deadline to send in your form if you think you might be able to attend. If you send it in and then discover you can’t come, please let us know.
The program schedule will be slightly different this year. We will call each class to go get their picture taken, and then that class will go directly to the serving line. This way, pictures will be early and each class will only need to be called once. We hope this allows for both more fellowship time with classmates as well as for those who need to leave a little early to be able to do so.
We are also working on some parking accommodations with a possible off-site location with shuttle service similar to what we did two years ago at Earlysville. We will let you know as we get closer to the reunion what we have worked out and how you can avail yourself of additional parking.
We are still asking for donations to help us cover costs of printing and mailing out newsletters, as well as donations for the Mike Cubbage Memorial Fund that will be addressed next. As always, we are looking for volunteers to help with setup, which we hope will take place early Friday evening before the reunion.
We are excited to share this time of reunion with you. More details of this year’s reunion are included in this newsletter. Please save the date. We can’t wait to fellowship with you this fall.
Naming Baseball Park after Mike Cubbage (Lane ’68)
By Lewis Martin (69)
As most of you know, Mike Cubbage succumbed to cancer last year. Mike graduated from Lane High School in 1968, having excelled in and captained Lane’s teams for football, basketball and baseball. He was offered scholarships in three sports from the University of Virginia, declining over fifty offers in football and baseball from other schools. After receiving the first full baseball scholarship at UVA, Mike was an all-ACC shortstop, a College All American and selected recently as one of nine members of the All-Time UVa Baseball Team. He began his professional career with the Washington Senators at third base and ended his playing days with the New York Mets. His love for the game never diminished, and he continued his Major League career as a coach, manager and scout. After forty-nine years in professional baseball, he retired in 2022. Mike’s extensive collection of baseball memorabilia is now being auctioned by his spouse, and the proceeds donated to medical research.
Mike honed his athletic skills on land used for the Lane High football team’s practice field across the street from the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church. The property is now owned by Albemarle County and used by baseball teams in Charlottesville’s Babe Ruth League. The County gave permission to name the park after Mike. The Lane High Alumni Reunion Committee is requesting contributions to a fund, to be managed by the Reunion Committee, to pay for signage and maintenance within the park prior to the dedication.
We hope you will give generously so we will have sufficient funds to expand the facility to attract and train young people in this all-American game Mike loved…a fitting tribute to one of Charlottesville’s most outstanding athletic talents. Regardless of whether you are able to attend this year’s reunion, please make a donation in memory of one of the most accomplished athletes to graduate from Lane High School. Please note your donation on the attached registration form and return the form with your donation as instructed in this mailing.

On November 7, Winkie SHEFFIELD Coyne (60) wrote: A most sincere “ Thank You “ for your very prompt response to my request for contact info for Mary Elaine and Duane Bickers and then tonight with the Lane High Reunion Roster… most appreciated…
But, more importantly, to YOU and all those involved with organizing the recent “All Class Lane High School Reunion” on Saturday… THANK YOU FOR YOUR MANY, MANY HOURS OF WORK INVOLVED IN MAKING IT SUCH AN ORGANIZED, MEMORABLE AND ENJOYABLE EVENT. Was fun for me seeing folks I hadn’t seen in many years..
Also, your kind comments about my Mother and Friday night skating at the Rec. center warmed my heart. Before she passed at 93 years of age our conversations always included “the happy stories relating to those Friday night gatherings”.. weren’t we all lucky being able to experience those times..
and having a safe place to gather with our friends.. Safekeeping and blessings to You, David and all your family…. Thanks again
On November 7, Carolyn RAMSEY Noland (64) wrote: Most important: THANK YOU for ALL you do to keep the records straight and enable us all to stay in communication!!
What a great reunion we had! I will pass the word and try to get some others interested in coming!
I did review your classmate information and noticed one thing: “Crickett” Brenda Roberts Graham lives in TN, not IN.
Again, thank you for all you do for our class and Lane! Wishing you good health and good times
