MULTI-CLASS REUNION OF LANE ALUMNI
SEPTEMBER 13, 2019

We have reserved the ballroom of the Elks Lodge and will enjoy a catered meal at 5:00 p.m.
Please note: Bring your name badge from prior years. If you don’t have your badge, we will have stick-ons available. We need to record your attendance, please stop by the registration table even if you have your badge from past years.
There is ample parking in the Elk’s Lodge lot. Those who are able bodied may enter up the steps to the main door. For those of us who are walking impaired, there is a handicapped ramp at the left end of the building, which leads to a hall that that goes to the ballroom.
SOME IMPORTANT INFO YOU SHOULD KNOW
We have met with 5 representatives of the younger group who have been putting on reunions for the classes of ’68, ’69 and ’70. They have expressed interest in taking over for us older folks, making it possible for Lane High Reunions to continue into the future. It is very fitting one of the group, Larry JOHNSON (68), is the son of Mildred SADLER Johnson (41) and John JOHNSON (40) who began the tradition of Lane High reunions when Mildred organized her 25th class reunion in 1966. As she continued doing reunions, she invited members of other classes who wished to attend. This eventually became the all-class reunions. The old guard committee will organize this year’s reunion. After this one, the two groups will meet to make the transition. Hopefully some of the younger group can be recruited to help out this year.
Remember, you may be able to attend this year’s reunion PRE-PAID, if you asked us to hold last year’s payment. Check the list on page 10 after the Registration form. If you are there, put PAID in the box.
It has been decided that if you DO NOT attend this year, the amount due you will be donated, in your name, to Lane High Reunions. We cannot continue to carry this forward, especially since we do not want to burden the new folks with this issue. THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING!
Other Reunion News:
The Class of 1957, including spouses, is invited to an informal Class Gathering on Thursday, September 12, 2019 starting at 6:00 PM at Timberwood Grill, located on Rt. 29 North opposite Hollymead Town Center. Please join us the eve before the Multi-Class Picnic. Contact Gerry Callaghan at 434-296-4878 or send an email dscrwr@aol.com if you plan to attend no later than September 1st.
The Class of 1964, including spouses, is invited to the 55th reunion of our Class. Following the Lane All Class Reunion on Friday 13th there will be activities on Saturday including the UVA football game, a tour of the newly renovated Rotunda and tours of Montpelier, home of James Madison. Rooms are available at Darden Inn on the University Grounds for a special rate of $159 per night. We have arranged a dinner Saturday at Sloney’s Pub and on the patio of Darden Inn for eating, visiting and celebrating our amazing class of 1964. The meal is $50 (tax incl.) per person for grilled steak, chicken and fish, baked potato bar, grilled veggies, Caesar salad, assorted rolls and dessert bar. Beverage bar is included (no alcoholic drinks) and you can purchase mixed drinks, wine and beer at the Pub. 5:30 cocktails, 6:30 dinner. You do not have to stay at Darden Inn to participate in the dinner. Come and renew friendships and join in the fun as we take a walk down memory LANE! Contact Sandy and Bob CURTIS

Stuart WATKINS (59) wrote: What a fun newsletter. Thanks for keeping it going. I was able to hear from several friends from the 1959 era, and it was good to learn how they are doing. I just published my eighth book; Fire So Hot, Make You Scoot Way Back. It is filled with poems about the life of cowboys, has children’s poems, poems about war veterans, love poems, and some that are just humorous. Sorry the rains hit so hard, but the plans for 2019 sound solid and I look forward to attending.

My sincere thanks to everyone who works so hard to keep it updated. I was so touched last year when so many of my classmates from 1964 came to my brother’s funeral to offer me their love and friendship at such a sad time in my life. I was unaware that the annual classmate picnic was on the same date. I will always treasure my friendships with Lane classmates. They continue to be among my life’s greatest treasures and blessings. Woody BIRCKHEAD (51) wrote: Sorry about the picnic and I could not make it this year. I moved into an assistant living association in August so I have a new phone number and address. I am doing fine but my wife is on oxygen and cannot handle the stairs at our home. After being retired for 24 years, I am now finding out what retirement is really like. I was so happy to hear the news about the Lane Graduates and their lives, or a little of it. I was very sorry to see the list of departures even though I know it is a part of life. I am very happy to hear Dr. Bobby Wood and Jackie are still around and sorry about Teddy and Mona. I was in the class of 1951 originally but due to Korea, I graduated with the class of 1953, so I enjoyed their family very much. Though I have been out of Virginia for many years, Charlottesville is still a special place in my life, as well as Lane High and the wonderful people I knew there. Good luck to you all. Jean COLE McCauley (Lane class of maybe 1950) Married to Lloyd Carey and lived/died in Silver Spring, Maryland. Born October 3, 1931 and died August 22, 2018. I am her cousin and found this information from a Silver Spring funeral home listing. I have found no obituary. I am married to Margaret Anne MARSHALL (Lane class of 1951). Living in the Boston, MA suburb of Weston. I cannot get her to write anything new. She wrote in some detail several years ago. We are good friends of Mary Elizabeth and Robert Snoddy.

I’ve been taking dialysis 3 days a week since 2015, so far doing well. I sold my house in Ch’ville and am now in the Park Oak Grove Assisted Living in Roanoke where my youngest son lives.

Cathy Lang wrote: I need to inform you that my husband Pete LANG passed away last year. He was 95 years old and died on December 10, 2017. He had a stroke on December 2. Pete fought in WWII. He went into the war in 1941 and when he came home graduated from Lane. He was married to Sarah BIBB Lang and they had 4 children. He was a golf pro like his oldest brother Ralph. Pete owned Swannanoa Golf Course on top of Afton Mountain for over 60 years. At the time of his death, he was married to Cathy and had two step-children. Pete loved people and had a wonderful personality. A good man and is missed by all his friends and family.
J. Andy SMITH III (61) wrote: I am moving from Devon PA where I have been since 1986 to Newton NJ. I have also married Kim Latham and our home will be in Newton. The new location is a great one for me since my primary work now is nature photography. We live on a small lake, the back half of which is in Swartswood State Park, and the Appalachian Trail access path is only ten minutes away. NW NJ is one of the hidden treasures of the state with mountains, lakes and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation area bordering on the West side. Thanks, Andy
