Lane High School Reunion
and something new: Parking!

By Larry Johnson
We are looking forward to this year’s annual reunion to be held back at East Rivanna VFD on Saturday, Nov. 7th. We do need your help with an important
issue: PARKING!

We are working on some parking accommodations with a possible off-site location with shuttle service as well as providing some valet service for those with walking difficulties. Trying to accommodate everyone close to the event hall is challenging, and although we tried to do a shuttle last year, very few took advantage. Our plan is to have offsite parking as you are on the way to Glenmore, so that you can park and take a shuttle to the event and back. If you have people with you, you will be able to drop them off at the station and go to the offsite parking and take the shuttle back, or we plan to have valet service that will take your car to the parking and then go get your car when you are ready to leave. This means that you can attend and have only the walk to the front door and back; door to door service! The round trip is less than 5 minutes. In order to achieve this goal and lessen the burden on many of our attendees, we will be looking for volunteers to help the committee. On the registration form will be a place to volunteer as a parking attendant. This will not impact your ability to participate in the reunion and see all your friends. Please consider assisting us with parking this year.

Also this year we are going to try and have a 9 hole golf event for anyone that might be interested. It will take place on Friday, Nov. 6th, at Meadowcreek Golf Course in the early afternoon. Teams of four will participate in a scramble, or Captain’s choice, format. Therefore, golfers of any ability are invited to join us and have a time of fun and fellowship. There will be a place on the registration form to sign up if you want to play.

We are still asking for donations to help us cover costs of printing and mailing out newsletters, as well as donations for the Mike Cubbage Memorial Fund. As always, we are looking for volunteers to help with setup, which we hope will take place early Friday evening before the reunion.

We look forward to sharing this time of reunion with you. More details of this year’s reunion are included in this newsletter. Please save the date. We can’t wait to fellowship with you this fall.

Remember to volunteer in any way you can by checking the blank(s) on the registration form.

On July 26, Sally MARTIN Griffith (65) wrote: Thank you SO MUCH for all you, and your committee, do for our class   You are the GREATEST.  I hated to miss last year, but am planning to come this year
With Continued Appreciation,  Sally Ray Martin Griffith

On July 26, Walter A. King (56) wrote: Many thanks. Sorry I can’t make it to the reunion but I want to stay informed and up to date. Thank you so much for the work that you are doing.

On July 25, Ellen PLANT Lawson (55) wrote: I graduated in 1955 and have only made it to one reunion and wish I were closer and that my sister was still in Charlottesville but she moved to Tidewater. several years ago. I do not travel these days. Thank you for all of this info and I wish I were closer and could attend this year. It is great that the reunions continue still. My friends and I still have conversations about the happenings and our friends and teachers, having graduated in 1955. My high school friends and I are still close and talk frequently. There was something very special about Lane High School and the environment there and many remaining close friendships have resulted. That is great!. Many fond memories! Ellen Lawson, 1955

In October, Peggy SMITH Savchik [70] wrote:  Many thanks to you for your work on the Annual Multi-Class Reunion of Lane High School and for the hours of work that you and others do to keep us in touch with each other.
I graduated in 1970. Dad was a federal employee, and the family left Charlotteville while I was at college. I returned “home” to the MD suburbs of Washington DC. However, I have been in upstate New York for more than 30 years now.  Growing Older, I cherish ALL information about classmates and friends!
It is now clear that a trip to Keswick on November 1 will NOT fit into our schedule. Obviously, I’m disappointed. I have not attended a Lane reunion in many years, but, for some reason, I was REALLY looking forward to this one!  SOOOOO – I am enclosing a check and asking you to give my love to the attendees from the class of 1970. Maybe, you can even arrange a treat for them (a case of beer, a few bottles of wine, ice cream?)!!  Love from another Black Knight, Peggy

On September 30, Toni W. Roades wrote:  This comes to you to explain a registration form you should get any day. It will undoubtedly look odd to you because neither I (Antoinette W. Roades) nor my husband (Lee Scouten) actually went to Lane. But…
I was born and grew up here; went to Clark and McGuffey, and then to Rock Hill before going off to college in New York. And even though I lived and worked away until 1981, Charlottesville was always home to me. As for Lee, he was raised on the Northern Neck and spent his high school years at Christchurch School in Middlesex before coming to U.Va. Then he left, too, for a while, but moved back here in ’83 and has called Charlottesville home ever since.
That means both Lane and a lot of Lane people have been important parts of our personal landscapes for a very long time. But, as you know, of course, the Charlottesville landscape — both human and physical — has changed a lot during that long time.
Lee and I are in our ’70s. So as is true of many in that age zone, we find out “whatever happened to?” too many people we knew and liked when their obituaries appear. No fun at all. But, we thought, it would be fun to be around a lot of others who shared our Charlottesville landscape and have a chance to touch base with them. (Note: Our high schools have alumni events, too. And we enjoy going to them.  But because both schools were much smaller than LHS and drew students from further flung home addresses, they don’t fill the same need.)
Signing up was Lee’s idea. I didn’t know whether that was possible. So I called Jim Carpenter, who didn’t know either and called Bob Hammond, who said that would be fine.
One other thing:  You have an attendance limit. Please let us know if our coming would prevent any actual LHS alums from being able to. If you hit your limit and you need a couple of extra places, we will certainly step aside. Otherwise, we’ll look forward to November 1st.     Appreciatively, Toni

On October 20, Martin CARBOTTI (66) wrote: Enclosed is my check for the Mike Cubbage Field. I knew Mike and he was a great guy. I’m sorry I can’t attend the reunion and I hope everyone has a great day.
